Welcome to Our Monthly Copilot Round-Up: From Productivity Tool to Business Co-worker

Written by Tim Polc | Oct 7, 2026, 9:36:48 AM

The pace of innovation across Microsoft Copilot shows no signs of slowing down. Each month brings new capabilities, enhancements and announcements designed to help organisations work more efficiently, unlock greater value from their data and accelerate their AI journey.

Our monthly Copilot round-up cuts through the noise to highlight the updates that matter most. From new productivity features and collaboration tools to emerging AI capabilities that could reshape the way organisations operate, we'll bring together the key announcements, what they mean and where businesses should be paying attention.

In this September edition, we explore the latest developments across SharePoint, PowerPoint, Excel and the wider Copilot ecosystem, including Microsoft's vision for the future with Home, Code and Autopilot.

Whether you're already using Copilot or considering your next steps, here's what stood out this month.

Copilot in SharePoint Continues to Evolve

Microsoft continues to invest heavily in SharePoint as the foundation of organisational knowledge. September's updates introduced further enhancements that help users extract greater value from content stored across SharePoint environments. These capabilities are designed to make information easier to discover, reuse and act upon, helping organisations turn their content repositories into more intelligent knowledge hubs.

For many organisations, this is particularly relevant as they modernise legacy file shares, improve information governance and prepare their data estate for wider AI adoption.

Better Presentation Creation with Brand Kit and Skills

PowerPoint received several notable improvements, including Brand Kit and Skills capabilities that help users create more consistent, professional and on-brand content. These updates are designed to reduce manual effort while ensuring presentations align with organisational standards.

As organisations seek to scale content creation across sales, marketing and operational teams, these capabilities can help improve efficiency without sacrificing quality or brand consistency.

Advanced Analysis Arrives in Excel

One of the most practical updates this month is the continued expansion of advanced analytical capabilities within Excel. Users can work with complex datasets more effectively using natural language prompts, helping them uncover trends, identify opportunities and generate insights faster than traditional spreadsheet analysis methods.

For business leaders, analysts and operational teams, this represents another step towards democratising data analysis and enabling better decision making across the organisation.

More Flexibility Through Expanded Model Choice

Microsoft has also introduced wider model choice within Copilot experiences, providing organisations with greater flexibility when selecting AI capabilities for different use cases. This reflects a growing recognition that different business scenarios may require different models, balancing factors such as performance, reasoning, creativity and cost.

As AI adoption matures, this flexibility will become increasingly important for organisations looking to optimise both outcomes and investment.

Understanding Work Better with Work IQ

Another notable development is Work IQ, which provides organisations with deeper insight into how work happens across Microsoft 365. By helping businesses gain a clearer understanding of collaboration patterns, productivity trends and working behaviours, Work IQ aims to support better decision-making around workplace effectiveness and employee enablement.

These insights can play an important role in helping organisations measure the effectiveness of AI adoption programmes and identify areas where additional support or optimisation may be required.

Looking Ahead: Home, Code and Autopilot

Perhaps the most significant announcement came later in the month with Microsoft's introduction of a new Copilot experience built around three key pillars: Home, Code and Autopilot.

Home brings together Chat and Cowork into a unified experience, creating a single destination for everyday AI-powered work.

Code enables users to create applications, dashboards, trackers and automations using natural language, lowering barriers to development and empowering more employees to build business solutions.

Autopilot represents an important step towards agentic AI. Previously known as Scout, it is designed to operate as a persistent agent that can continue delegated work in the background, moving Copilot beyond conversation and into task execution.

Microsoft has indicated that these capabilities will be introduced gradually through preview programmes and will not be immediately available to all customers. The company is also introducing a distinction between everyday Copilot usage and more advanced experiences that consume Copilot Credits, giving organisations greater control over access and spending.

What This Means for Organisations

The overarching theme from September's announcements is clear: Microsoft is expanding Copilot from an assistive productivity tool into a platform for intelligent work.

While individual features such as enhanced PowerPoint capabilities, advanced Excel analysis and SharePoint improvements will deliver immediate productivity benefits, the longer-term opportunity lies in how organisations prepare for increasingly autonomous AI experiences.

As capabilities like Autopilot, AI-powered application development and intelligent workplace insights continue to mature, organisations will need to look beyond deployment and focus on readiness, governance, adoption and business process transformation.

The question is no longer whether organisations should adopt AI. The focus is now on how effectively they can turn AI investments into measurable business outcomes.

At bluesource, we're helping organisations maximise the value of Microsoft Copilot through readiness assessments, governance, adoption strategies and ongoing optimisation, ensuring businesses can safely unlock the next generation of AI-powered productivity.
